Edwardian sterling silver cream jug engraved with a most intriguing inscription. Sheffield 1907 by H. Stratford overstriking another. The body is plain and curves out slightly from the flat, circular, base. The straight sides taper slightly to the top end of the jug, which has a lip for pouring and is finished with a rim around the external edge. The plain handle is on the opposite side to the lip. The full set of hallmarks and the maker's mark are struck very clearly to the right of the handle, just below the rim. The marks have been struck so forcibly that their impression is visible on the inside of the jug. It seems as though the maker's mark is overstriking another. The base of the jug is stamped with manufacturer's numbers 2552. The inscription is engraved beneath the lip and reads: "PUSSY"/ In grateful remembrance/ and with every good wish/ from/ William D. Herries/ 1879 - 1881,/ &/ Alexander D. Herries/ 1903 - 1905.
