Isabella Pollexfen was born in 1849 in Sligo, Ireland. She was an artist of considerable talent, who before her marriage exhibited portraits at the Royal Academy.

In 1876 she met, at Julian’s Studio in Paris, John Varley (1850-1933). Isabella married the landscape artist and they had two daughters, Cecilia and Ida. The definitive biography on Varley was written by her.

Isabella Pollexfen along with her husband became very interested in the occult. They were drawn to Theosophy, and were of the Inner Circle who gathered round Madame Blavatsky in London in 1883-4. They are among the first group of Theosophists who offered themselves to be disciples of the Masters, and their signatures appear in the
unique document on the matter which bears the hand- writings and initials of the two Masters M. and K.H.

Isabella was the aunt of John Butler Yeats and in 1884 gave him a copy of A. P. Sinnett's Esoteric Buddhism. Yeats sometimes made drawings of Isabella.
