Full contemporary sprinkled calf, raised bands, spine in six panels, modern morocco title label to second panel, volume number in gilt to third, date to foot, covers with double fillet border. Modern reback, corners bumped and rubbed, old repair to upper cover of volume one, one gathering slightly proud in volume one. Internally some occasional very light browning, previous owner's name to head of titles, otherwise generally bright and clean. With an engraved frontispiece and five engraved plates as called for (both uncontrolled notes on Estc are erroneous). Dufour 212 (a note on English editions, without actually listing any). First separate English edition of Rousseau's educational and philosophical work, first published in French the year before, which he considered to be his most important work
