A portrait miniature of Violet Constance Deane (1870-1950) painted when she was aged three and a half. Violet has long brown hair falling in ringlets and brown eyes. She is wearing a white dress with an oval neckline edged with a frill, short sleeves edged with lace and a blue bow and a blue ribbon waist sash.

Watercolour on ivory in a rectangular gilt metal frame, the miniature is signed: E L Deane/fecit/1874Violet Constance Deane was the daughter of Hugh Pollexfen Deane (b. 1836, London) and Juliette Deane (nee Daniel 1867 Somerset).

She was born in Malta in 1870.

The miniature was painted by Miss Emmeline Deane who exhibited at the Royal Academy 1879-1934. She had addresses at 20 Sion Hill, Bath, Cheney Court, Box, Wilts and 54a Bedford Gardens, London. She executed figures, studies and miniatures. A large portrait of Cardinal Newman by this artist is in the National Portrait Gallery.
