Hand Carved and Painted Birchwood
Initialled “J A D O” and Dated “1814”
A charming and well decorated love token, this mangle board is if generally fine overall condition and retains excellent original painted decoration in the “Rosemaling” tradition. The stylised horse form handle is unusually generous and rounded in form, an engaging naïve sculpture. The simple cartouche contains the initials and date, which normally represent the Bride and date of her wedding. The Mangle Board is considered important in the courtship ritual as the young women were accustomed to working with the weaving, and working of cloth and would be regularly reminded of their suitor. Once married, young brides are also reputed to have hung their mangle boards on their front door, to indicate that they would take in washing for villagers. This charming and unusual example has a particular Folk Art spirit and feel.
