Architectural and scale models were mainly produced to illustrate and communicate structural and design ideas in a three-dimensional visual form. As tangible representations of a structure they helped to explain to customers and committees the essentials of a project. They have always been collected and in the age of the Grand Tour many plaster, and sometimes cork, models were made of important ancient buildings. In the mid 19th century the famous Regency architect John Nash left his entire collection of architectural models to the Victoria & Albert Museum.
