An English Engraved Ivory Hunting or Coursing Season Ticket Decorated with Two Riders on Horseback and a Huntsman with a Long Legged Sight Hound
The reverse engraved with a crest of a crowned lion beside an anchor. Perhaps used for the hare coursing season

Size: 5.5cm high, 6.5cm wide – 2¼ ins high, 2½ ins wide

In 1776 Doncaster racecourse sold 150 oval silver tickets at 7 guineas each to raise money for the building of a new stand, with a view of which they were engraved. Each is numbered and about 20 are still in use and entitle the holder to free admission. A number of season tickets for Vauxhall Gardens, dating from about 1732 to 1751 are preserved in the British Museum. One made of gold was given by Jonathan Tyers to William Hogarth.
