A portrait miniature of Major Watkin Griffith 27th Light Dragoons painted in Calcutta in 1790. He is wearing the uniform of the Light Dragoons, a dark blue jacket with white collar and frogging, silver fringed epaulette, frilled white cravat and black stock. He served as a Captain in the 27th from 1795-1800 and subsequently as Major in the 29th Light Dragoons.

Watercolour on ivory in an oval gold frame, the reverse inscribed with details of his final battle "on the Plains of Hindustan".

Major Watkin Griffith was killed leading a charge of the 29th Light Dragoons in India in 1803.

The inscription to the reverse of the miniature reads:

"29 year old/ Watkin Griffith/ Major in the 29th/Regt of L.D. wh he/ commanded on the glorious but fatal 1st of Nov 1803/on the Plains of/Hindustan/where after leading on/His Regt to their most desperate charge/he was struck by a cannon ball!/& instantly expired!!!"

There is also another inscription beneath the above written on a playing card which reads:

"This miniature/was done at/Calcutta 1790/a great likeness/but not near so/Handsome as Major/Griffith/Peace to the Brave"
