Watercolour on ivory in an oval gold frame, the reverse inscribed with details of his final battle "on the Plains of Hindustan".
Major Watkin Griffith was killed leading a charge of the 29th Light Dragoons in India in 1803.
The inscription to the reverse of the miniature reads:
"29 year old/ Watkin Griffith/ Major in the 29th/Regt of L.D. wh he/ commanded on the glorious but fatal 1st of Nov 1803/on the Plains of/Hindustan/where after leading on/His Regt to their most desperate charge/he was struck by a cannon ball!/& instantly expired!!!"
There is also another inscription beneath the above written on a playing card which reads:
"This miniature/was done at/Calcutta 1790/a great likeness/but not near so/Handsome as Major/Griffith/Peace to the Brave"
