A charming portrait miniature of Harriet Fourdrinier (nee Pownall) aged about 18 months. She is wearing a white dress with a square neckline with a lace edging, a deep blue sash with a large bow, a white lace bonnet trimmed with a blue ribbon and she clutches a ball in her left hand.

Watercolour on ivory in an oval gold frame with beaded edging and edged with natural pearls.

Harriet Purnell Pownall was born in 1784 and married Sealey Fourdriners in 1800 when she was aged 16. She gave birth to James in 1805, Harriet in 1808 and Louisa in 1813. She died in 1863.

Harriet Fourdrinier was Great Grandmother to Violet Deane (miniature number 5421 on this site).

Early in the 19th century the Fourdrinier brothers invented a paper making machine of the same name.
