A portrait miniature of Lieutenant Colonel John Thomas Griffiths in the uniform of the 6th Regiment of Foot. He is wearing a scarlet coated with buff coloured facings and collar, white chemise and a black stock, two gold fringed epaulettes and a white leather cross belt. He has dark curling hair and bright blue eyes.

John Thomas Griffiths was born on 21st December 1798 to General Charles Griffiths of the 11th Regiment at Yarmouth, Isle of Wight who was Captain of the Castle there. General Griffiths was the fourth son of Carmarthenshire grandee John Griffiths of Cil-y-Hyn and Erryd, representative of an ancient Welsh family.

John Thomas Griffiths joined the army and was sent to India where he met and married Emma only daughter of Lt. Colonel Hugh Maurice Scott on 24th November 1825. They had three sons and six daughters. John Thomas rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and retired to Douglas, Isle of Man where he died on 26th September 1876.
