Exceptional painting by one of the 19th century's finest marine painters.
James E Buttersworth was the son of Thomas Buttersworth the well known English marine painter.
Thomas taught his son how to paint and many of the sons early works look very similar to the paintings of his father.
He soon eclipsed the work of his farther when he travelled to America and became one of the most sought after marine painters of his time with scenes of New York and Boston.
This is a subject he liked to paint many times both with English and American ships being battered by the sea.
