Of cylindrical form with loop handle, the silver mounted rim stamped with maker's mark of ‘P.I’ within an oval punch and scratch weight mark, the cartouche with an engraved coat of arms, the underside with ink inscribed label: 'This "Black Jack" belonged to Henry King Bishop of Chichester 1642-1669.'
The engraved coat of arms is split into four quarters: the top right hand quarter contains a crescent moon: a symbol of hope to greater honour. The top left and bottom right quarters both house a lion, an animal which has always enjoyed a high place in heraldry as the emblem of undying courage, and hence that of a valiant warrior. Both lions are posed as ‘lion rampant’, and one is crowned. The shell at the top is a symbol of protection of providence.
Reputedly Henry King (1592–1669), Bishop of Chichester, 1642-1669.
