D268. This interesting and fine quality clock, although signed by Dent, would have been bought by him from Paul Garnier. The clock, numbered 2796, is an example of one of his fourth series of carriage clocks, one of which is illustrated in “Carriage and other travelling clocks” by Derek Roberts, page 66, fig 3-96.

It has a fine fully engraved case , including the back door, which has shutters for the hand-set and winding squares. The front and back corners, including the top and base, are champhered and the handle is most attractively shaped. Interestingly the clock must have been bought by Dents for their own use as it is inscribed inside the back door “Dent, 33 Cockspur Street. Loan Clock No 3. Presumably it was lent to customers when their own clock was taken in for repair.

The movement is signed on the backplate “Dent Paris.”
