An Eskimo Walrus Ivory Thimble Guard carved in the form of a Whale
18th Century

Size: 7cm long – 2¾ ins long
Provenance: Ex London private collection
Traditionally, Eskimo women have used sealskin thimbles when sewing and mending clothing and they kept track of these by slipping them onto thimble guards when they were not in use. These guards were carved in various forms and were attached to the needle case strap or stored with the needle case in a 'housewife'; a small storage bag.
