Item Description / Dealer Expertise

D246. A relatively rare and fine quality two train skeleton clock with balance wheel escapement which may safely be attributed to Evans of Handsworth, circa 1850.

The use of a balance wheel escapement on skeleton clocks is quite rare and is probably why Evans featured it mounted so prominently on the front of this clock, with the large balance wheel being placed vertically and the pallets jewelled. Interestingly he also used the same frame to apply the gravity escapement to.( See figs 5,4a,b,c. of British skeleton clocks by Derek Roberts.)

The two train chain fusee movement has wheel-work with six crossings throughout the train
and is finely finished. The dial is attractively fretted out with each of the Gothic numerals being placed individually on a shield. Below the dial is a silvered plaque bearing the name of the retailers T & J Olivant, Manchester, who were also clockmakers.

Height with/ without dome. 20" (51cms) / 17.5". (45 cms.) £5,750.
