Evert Moll (1878-1955) was a self-taught Dutch marine artist, influenced by the Hague School, and a member of the Pulchri Studio. Typical characteristics of Moll's work include broken brushwork and the use of pure colours. Moll's work is difficult to date, as his style changed little. His work is highly collected and frequently sold at major auctions, his finest paintings are preserved in various collections, including the V&A in London.

This painting is a typical work by Evert Moll, who specialised in landscapes and seascapes, and particularly boats in harbour. It shows a busy day at the Rotterdam harbour, with vivid tones that radiate under a bright sunlight. Framed and signed lower right, it measures 23 in x 15.5 in (58.5 cm by 39.5 cm). Circa early 1900’s. Inscribed to the back.

Provenance: Captain Colin Douglas Maude DSO DSC (1903-1980) who was a Royal Navy Officer during World War II commanding the Destroyers Somali and Icarus and who acted at Beachmaster of Juno Beach at the D-Day Landings.
