With Traces of Original Paint
The Underside Carved with Later Initials 'OOS' and Date '1863'
The rim of the bowl is in the stylised form of a heart, a motif endorsing that the vessel was originally made to commission for a wedding ceremony.
Dug out and hand carved from a heavy single block of root birch wood, the carved decoration to the underside of the spout and handle are particularly finely executed, it has a rich dark overall colour with hints of historic painted decoration, particularly within and around the carved details and to the body.
The underside has been later initialled and dated 1863, whilst the piece probably dates to c.1760-1780 in origin.
Spouted ale bowls are anyway quite rare pieces and this is one of the finest examples we have handled.
