This exquisitely worked pictorial band sampler is dated 1681, and bears the intitals "K L T MB S". The first four bands are of alphabets in various stitches and styles; this is followed by a band of initials, then three bands of white work embroidered in intricate detached buttonhole stitches and three further bands worked in white work with counted satin and Gobelin stitches giving an effect of damask; the pictorial band has two "boxers" and two large flowers with stylised leaves worked in double running stitches, and is followed by twelve bands of flowers, fruit and foliage. The sampler is worked in polychrome silk and linen threads on linen. English, late 17th century. Height 33 1/4" (84.5cm) Width 7 1/2" (19cm) - excluding frame and mount.
