This is a truly beautiful and most rare carriage clock of French manufacture dating from the last half of the 19th century which is in lovely condition.
The images should show prospective buyers all they need to see but a personal inspection is very welcome.
The Anglaise style case has Corinthian columns on each corner but I ask interested parties to carefully study the side panels which are made of Limoges enamel depicting a young huntsman and his dogs on one side and a maiden holding a tethered bird which at first glance appears to be a white dove but , more likely, to be a bird of prey used for hunting.
The detail and delicacy are quite remarkable as can be seen from the images. The figures themselves are slightly raised to give a three dimensional effect
The gilded dial has a cast sight ring and is signed by the retailer John Walker ,77 Cornhill London and would date circa 1880. The clock itself is of French manufacture and although the movement plates are unsigned but numbered , the original high quality silvered lever platform escapement is stamped G V for Gay Vicarino who was an eminent clockmaker in the 19th Century.
The 8 day duration movement is of typical high quality and strikes the hours and half hours on a coiled gong.
An unusual feature is that a sound box has been made under the clock to amplify the gong
A sign of true quality is the removeable rear shuttered door provided to exclude the ingress of dust and dirt.
It is approximately 8 1/4 inches high (handle raised) it is 6 1/4 inches high with the handle down, 4 inches wide and 3 1/2 inches deep
The overall condition simply as good as anyone could expect for a clock of this age. The movement is working perfectly and the gilding superb.
Under an eye glass there is a tiny hairline crack on the maidens face a a little on the young mans face but considering how fragile Limoge enamel is the condition is outstanding and certainly does not require and restoration.
Although I provide detailed photographs to the best of my ability this clock really needs to be personally viewed to appreciate to quality.
