An extremely rare oval Chelsea spoontray with spiral fluting moulded with acanthus leaves to the reverse and the front decorated with bouquets and sprays of flowers.
The Chelsea factory sale catalogues of 1755 and 1756 show that most Chelsea tea services described as ‘compleat’ did not include a spoontray. Although they are occasionally mentioned in the factory catalogues as in ‘a spoon boat, scollpt in flowers and green leaves’. All Chelsea spoontrays are extremely rare.
A similar spoontray is illustrated by John C Austin, Chelsea Porcelain at Williamsburg (1977), fig.74, p.84.
