Gillett worked in pen and ink, oil, watercolour and pastel and his subjects where often taken from sporting and rural life. This poignant pastel of Norfolk Volunteer soldiers on parade is unusual in Gillett’s oeuvre. It was executed sometime around Gillett’s return to Norfolk in 1916 and shows the collected countrymen, both old-timers and nervous boys, in training for possible active service in the Great War. |

| GILLETT |
Gillett was born in Worlingham in Suffolk and was the son of the Rev Jesse Gillett of Aldeby. He was educated at Gresham’s in Holt, Norfolk and at the age of sixteen he left school to work as a clerk for the Committee of Lloyds in the City. In 1896 he gave up his job to pursue a career as a full time artist and worked as an illustrator for the Daily Graphic, Black & White and the Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News. He exhibited in London at the Royal Academy, Fine Art Society and Royal Society of Painters in Water Colours where he was elected a full member in 1909. He was also a member of the Langham Sketch Club. He lived in London before moving back to Aldeby in 1916.
