A tobacco stopper, most probably formed from the tip of an antler, polished and decorated pyrographically so as to appear like a shell. The silver metal cap (worn) unscrews to reveal a cavity which could have held a silver mouthpiece. Two of these, amongst many similar, are illustrated in Alastair Leslie's excellent work, 'Three Hundred Years of Tobacco Stoppers', plate 108. English circa 1800.
