A painter of landscapes, animals and country subjects, Friedrich William Keyl was born in Frankfurt in 1823 but spent much of his life in England. He was a pupil of Landseer, who introduced him to the royal family, for whom he painted many animal pictures. Keyl exhibited 42 works at the Royal Academy, including titles such as Donkey and Foal, Malvern Hills, Chewing the Cud and Chinese Lap Dog, the property of Her Majesty. He died in London in 1871.
