Charles Edward John Leslie was born on 27 November 1839 in the Pentonville Road area of Islington, London. He came from the Williams family of artists with his maternal grandfather being Edward Williams (1781–1855) a well-known landscape painter, and the father of six sons all of whom were artists. Leslie developed his talent by studying under his uncles, especially George Augustus Williams, whom he lived with in 1856 and 1857 at 32 Castelnau Villas in Barnes. He specialised in painting views of the lakes and moorlands of Wales and Scotland and was one of the first painters of the subject in the Victorian tradition.

He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1856 to 1862. He also exhibited at the British Institution, Suffolk Street Gallery and at local and provincial art galleries. Leslie died of liver disease at the age of 46 on 9 September 1886 at Mitcham Road Tooting near Wandsworth, Surrey. Works can be found at the National Library of Wales, the Royal Holloway Museum at the University of London and the Victoria Museum and Gallery in Liverpool. Some of his paintings are also held by the National Trust in the Lake District.

The painting is housed in a new, English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition.
