FIGURES ON A PATH NEAR A RIVER
HENDRICK PIETER KOEKKOEK
1843 – 1890 signed
Oil on canvas 16 ¼ x 23 ½ inches
Born in Hilversum, Holland into the most eminent dynasty of Dutch painters in the 19th Century.
He was the son of Marinus Adrianus Koekkoek the great romantic landscape painter. Hendrick was taught by his father and they shared a studio in Amsterdam. In 1866 Hendrick visited England where he became very influenced by the softer British Schools of landscape painting. On his return to Holland, he used the British style and colouring in his landscapes. In 1874 he started exhibiting in Amsterdam but by 1880 he seems to have settled near Guildford in England where he remained until his untimely death in 1890.
Despite his short career he did much to bring the English and Dutch styles together as the Naysmith and Crome families had done before.
His works have a wonderful sense of brush foliage and delicate north light in the skies.
Although he belongs to the Dutch Romantic School by origin, he is often classed as British School
