In his early days Durman received a photographic training in Weymouth, moved to London and was soon appointed to the Display Department of the Imperial Tobacco Co. as artist and photographer. Later he transferred to Mardon Son and Hall.

During the War he served as an officer in the R.A.S.C. He worked in all types of materials and gained a reputation as a mural artist, producing work for the Berkeley Cafe, Clifton and in Saltford Community Hall.

He was a successful poster designer some of which posters were nude studies. One done for British Railways caused a furore with Ramsgate Local Council.

He lived at Saltford where he died in 1963 aged 58.
