Fine 19th century prisoner of war model of a frigate Pomone, with forty four guns.
H M Frigate Pomome had 44 guns. Taken in 1794 by Sir J B Warren then becoming the flagship of his frigate squadron cruising near Cape Finisterre to protect trade, she took part in the capture or sinking of 13 enemy ships 1795-7, notably Jean Bart (26) Andromaque (36) and Calliope (36). Under different Commanders she captured Cheri (26) in the Bay of Biscay, 1798. The Pomone was sold circa 1803.
Since Napoleonic times POWs had good reasons to make decorative objects – unending days with little to occupy them and limited food and money. Much POW work was therefore done with the express intention of trading the finished article for food, money or other privileges.
