This is a particularly fine London made Longcase clock made in the first part of the 18th Century by William Halstead of London who was apprenticed in 1705 and was admitted to the Clockmakers Company in 1715 to 1718 .His father was also a successful clockmaker and was working from 1667 until he died in 1705.
This is very early for an arched dial clock which did not become popular until later in the century and this clock is typical of the period with a shallow arch 12 inch dial and is beautifully decorated with fine engraving and is devoid of the arch spandrels used later.
The finned five pillar 8 day duration rack striking movement is of the finest London quality and has the unusual feature of a Calender in the arch . It has been sympathetically cleaned and serviced and in full working order. The hours are truck on a bell.
The case is constructed of English oak and is veneered in Burr elm which has the most wonderful grain and colour and its use in such applications is very uncommon indeed . I have seen two other clocks using this veneer in over 30 years of dealing .
The proportions are near perfect with a long slim trunk and a height that is quite small for this type of clock.
Please study the pictures to see the details such as the use of short grain mouldings and veneer on the masking.Straight grain veneers are used horizontally to the sides.
The overall condition is excellent as this clock was previously owned by one of the worlds foremost professional Horologists.
I would urge any interested parties to view this clock and/or bring any expert appraiser as this clock is original and genuine.
The clock is 7 ft 5 inches tall, 12 3/8 wide at the trunk and 19 1/2 inches at the bottom of the base.It is a maximum of 9 inches deep.
This clock is sold with brass cased weights, pendulum and key.
I can honestly say this is one of the best longcases I have ever owned and would be a suitable addition to any collection.
If the asking price is paid in full I will deliver and set up the clock free of charge in England,Wales and the Scottish lowlands.
If a lesser offer is accepted then this will be considered a trade sale with the clock sold as described but with shipping charges the responsibility of the buyer.
