A Pair of Irish George II Style Mahogany Chairs

Ireland, c. 1890

By Michael Butler of Dublin, recorded at Upper Abbey Street, between 1885 and 1903. Antique furniture collector and dealer himself, Michael Butler specialised in top quality reproductions of rare early18th century Irish designs.

The brown leather close-nailed upholstered back and seat over acanthus and volute-headed cabriole legs with pierced inscrolled eagles' heads to the knees, terminating in finely detailed claw-and-ball feet with open talons. Back legs stamped '7670'.

Butler family were primarily responsible for the re-evaluation of Irish furniture in the late nineteenth century in Dublin. Their clients included a veritable who’s who among Irish gentry and nobility, such as the 5th Earl of Cadogan, 2nd Earl of Dudley, the Duke and Duchess of Connaught, Earl and Countess of Coventry, and Sir Edward Guinness, later 1st Earl of Iveagh.
