The manufacturing firm of silversmiths, Robert Harper & Son was established in around 1853 by Robert Harper, joined in or around 1869 by his son John Robert. He advertised as a 'Wholesale Silversmith... Manufacturer of Prize and Presentation Cups, Tea and Coffee Services, Salvers, Claret Jugs...etc". The partnership was dissolved in 1880.

The organ grinder would carry his barrel organ in front of him with it supported by a hinged or removable wooden stick or leg that was strapped to the back of the organ. A strap would balance the organ, leaving one hand free to turn the crank and the other to steady the organ. He was often accompanied by a monkey who would collect money from the crowd in a little tin cup.
