This five-octave unfretted Clavichord was made by Hugh Gough and is dated 1949. Gough, one of Carl Dolmetsch's earliest pupils in the re-awakening of study and interest into seventeenth- and eighteenth-century performance practices, worked from 1946 in the UK and latterly in Boston USA.

This instrument is an early example of Gough's craft. The clavichord displays Gough's skill both as a technician in the manner in which the keys are leaded to establish balanced and even tone and as a master of construction and with an eye to the careful precision with which the beautiful walnut veneer has been executed.

All strings are present and there are some spare strings. The instrument will need some re-tuning. There are two cracks (see photo) under some of the strings on the soundbox. The advice from two professional clavichord builders is to leave them as there is no adverse effect to the mellow and mellifluous tone of this marvellous instrument.
