circa 1520, probably Tournai.
This tapestry panel, originally part of a much larger tapestry,
depicts the Marriage of Tobias and Sarah taken from the
book of Tobit Chapter 7 and 8 in the Apochrophia.
Tobias is shown lying in bed with his new wife Sarah
whilst a servant draws the curtains. The lettering shows the
old word for marriage ‘hymenis’.
In the foreground are Raguel and Edna, parents of Sarah
with their daughter. She apparently had three previous
husbands who died, and the Angel flying in from the right is
Raphael who is banishing the demons who caused their
deaths.
