A Work Table in the manner of E.H. Baldock and Robert Blake

Constructed in goncalo alves, dressed with very fine marquetry work housed within coromandel reserves; rising from four scrolled castor shod feet supporting an incurved rectangular platform base with floral marquetry work; an inlaid hexagonal centre column issues from the lotus leaf carved base, the rectangular marquetry dressed platform housing a single drawer, fitted in faded silk with compartments and a selection of Mother-of Pearl lidded containers and sewing implements, surmounted by a pierced and sinuous gallery.

Edward Holmes Baldock (1777-1845) is listed in London Trade Directories of the early Nineteenth century in various capacities. He first appears at 7 Hanway Street, London in 1805 described as a ‘dealer in china and glass’ and by 1821 as ‘an antique furniture and ornamental furniture dealer’. By 1826 the various facets of the business included ‘buying and selling, exchanging and valuing china, cabinets, screens, bronzes etc’. He counted the Crown, Duke of Sutherland and Baron Hatherton, inter alia.

Robert Blake, a neighbour, of Tottenham Court Road, a cabinet maker and inlayer included in ‘The Dictionary of English Furniture Makers 1660-1840’ pub Furniture History Society 1986, is recorded as having worked for worked for Baldock
