Gustave Poetzsch was born in Neuchâtel in Switzerland in 1870 and was inspired from an early age to start painting by the beauty of the mountains and lakes of his native country. He travelled to Paris in 1892 to further his studies firstly at the Académie Julian, subsequently at the École des Beaux Arts, and finally in the studio of the renowned Symbolist artist, Gustave Moreau.

Gustave Poetzsch married Marie-Louise Aulagne in 1896. She was one of the most fashionable Parisian hat designers with a wealthy and elegant clientele. Poetzsch painted several portraits of the Society women who helped to create the fashions of the Belle Époque, and also the same people promenading in the exclusive areas of Paris and its environs, and on holiday in Deauville and Brittany.

The Poetzsch family owned a house in the Auvergne region of central France near the lace making town of Le Puy-en-Velay, and Gustave Poetzsch was equally inspired by the undulating landscapes, stone farmhouses and villages, and lace makers working outside in the summer light. These paintings are far from the bustle of Paris and fashionable seaside resorts, representing a simpler way of life that would soon disappear.

Gustave Poetzsch died in 1950.
