A finely engraved bronze sundial, probably from the workshops of Francis Barker & Son. This maker started work at the age of 8 as an apprentice to James and George Simms. Over the course of some 20 years he learned his trade as a dialist and compass maker, gaining a reputation for his fine work. In 1848 Francis established the company of F. Barker & Son at 12 Clerkenwell Road, and also formed a partnership with Richard Groves in the same trade. Extraordinarily, he also continued to run J&G Simms until one of the brothers died in 1855. This example stands on three turned feet and is covered in a beautiful verdigris patination. English circa 1850.
10 inches diameter.
