fronted Stick Barometer; the front-to-back “swan-neck” pediment over engraved silvered brass register plate, signed by the maker and bearing rack-and-pinion operated vernier, protected by bowed glazed cover. The trunk of well-patinated figured Cuban mahogany, with original concealed barometer tube terminating behind ebonised boxwood urn-shaped cistern cover.c1820
Francesco Molteni was a prominent member of the Italian immigrant barometer making community, centred in Holborn, London, who settled in England around 1790. Changing his name to Francis Molten, then to Molton he subsequently established a highly successful business in Norwich from c1810-35
