This Limoges enamel plaque depicts the favourite mistress of King Louis XV of France, Madame de Pompadour. Well-known and loved for her contribution as patron of the arts, de Pompadour was an erudite, well-ready companion to the King, and regularly commissioned portraits by artists of her day. The portrait after which this enamel plaque is decorated, was painted by Quentin Delatour (French, 1704-1788) in circa 1748 and appeared in the French Salon in 1755. Working mostly in pastel, Delatour was one of the most famous painters of the Rococo period, and his notable portrait subjects included Louis XV of France, Voltaire and Rousseau.

The plaque depicts Madame de Pomadour in her study leafing through a manuscript, surrounded by books and other emblems of the arts. She is depicted wearing a voluminous floral dress, and her hair is delicately coiffed. Such a depiction portrays de Pompadour, who was the most powerful woman in France, as a learned, intelligent and beautiful woman who was worthy of the King's ear and affection.
