A truly exceptional example of continental silver plate, this French centerpiece is formed in the exuberant Troubadour style. The oval form is adorned with drapery swags and ornate balustrade ends surmounted by lion masks, which flank a putto standing upon a column. Two pairs of dolphins give support to this unique and highly ornate vessel. Such a large, decorative centerpiece would have been difficult to execute in sterling silver, due to its malleability. The inherent strength of silver plate, however, allowed for a greater range of designs simply not possible with sterling.
The rediscovery of medieval civilization and the desire to recapture the era's elegance in the early 19th century led to the emergence of the Troubadour style. Named after the legendary lyric poets, this artistic movement permeated the worlds of painting, architecture, literature and the decorative arts. In terms of the later, the Troubadour style closely resembles the exuberant Gothic Revival, enriched with intricate details and high-level decoration,
circa 1850.
Measure: 25 1/2" wide x 12 1/4" deep x 25" high.
