Georg Oeder was something of an enigma in the artworld, he was born in the French town of Aix-la-Chapelle but based his career from Dusseldorf in Germany. It is possible that he moved to Dusseldorf in order to attend the celebrated Dusseldorf Academy of fine art, but no formal records exist of this. Oeder worked entirely alone and formed no part of a group or school. He is known to have travelled widely in Europe and virtually his entire output consists of landscape paintings. Oeder did exhibit in most of the major international salons and won medals in Vienna, London, Berlin and Munich. Oeder’s pictures are intimate portraits of the landscapes in which he worked. Today his work is in the permanent collections of museums in Aix-la-Chapelle, Berlin, Cologne and Dusseldorf.
