This form of table, sometimes known as a ‘Universal Table’ or ‘Secret Flap Table’ achieved some popularity amongst London cabinet makers. A similar design was illustrated and described in Thomas Sheraton’s 'The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer’s Drawing Book' published in November 1791.

President Thomas Jefferson ordered such a table from Samuel Titt of London for use in his house Monticello in the United States of America and had it shipped out to him by Captain Anderson on the Isabella for which the cabinet maker charged him the high price of £6.6s. (six guineas).
