George Bingham, circa 1785 A profile of George Dawson wearing uniform with epaulette and fantail hat with cockade and plumes Painted on plaster, trade label on the reverse, set in the original hammered brass frame (minor chip to the plaster on the left hand side at the border) The reverse inscribed in later hand in pencil Trade Label/ by G Bingham/ of George Dawson/ 177 St. John's Yorkshirere. Silhouettes by George Bingham are very rare. The costume found in this profile suggests that he worked as early as 1780. Although he is listed in the street directory for 1811 in Manchester, he clearly worked in Yorkshire as shown by the inscription on the reverse of this silhouette. Mckechnie in her dictionary of silhouette artists was not able to illustrate his work or trade label as she there no examples of Binghams's work were available at that time.
