Additional Information: GEORGE ENGLEHEART 1750 - 1829 He was one of eight sons born to Francis Englehart a German plaster modeller and his wife Anne Dawney. He was a pupil of George Barret, R.A. and Sir Joshua Reynolds, some of whose work he copied in miniature. After his father died, the spelling of the name was changed to Engleheart. Exhibited at the R.A. 1773-1822. Worked chiefly in London at Shepherd Street, Hanover Square (1773) and Princes Street, Hanover Square (1776), in 1783 he moved to Hertford Street, Mayfair. His work falls into three phases. His earliest miniatures were sometimes signed G.E. on the front, the size of his miniatures of this period were usually small and the backgrounds a darkish buff colour, the shading often being obtained by fine vertical or slightly slanting strokes and the application of opaque white to indicate the highlights on the hair and face. From c1780-1795 there was a marked change; his full powers developed, his colouring became strong, his draughtsmanship was good and although he still used small ivories, the quality of the work was excellent. Characteristic of this period are large deep-set eyes, set under rather heavy eyebrows, the hair drawn in lines rather than in masses and diagonal grey lines at the corner of the mouth. Towards the end of this period he began to sign with a cursive E on the front, followed by a full inscription on the reverse including his address. From c1795 the size of his miniatures were 3-4" tall and he was at the height of his power. His miniatures were elegant and attractive, and he was a prolific worker. Examples of his work are in the V & A, the Wallace Collection, the Fitzwilliam Museum Cambridge, the Ashmolean Museum Oxford and many private collections including those of the Queen.
