A rare 19th Century 61/2-inch [16cm] brass-cased ‘Typhoon Barometer’; the well-executed case with brass suspension loop. The engraved, silvered brass dial, with visible barometer movement, signed by the makers, scaled in inches and centimetres, and inscribed with four forecasts relating to southern Asian weather conditions. The dial also bears a mercury Fahrenheit thermometer.

Captain George Falconer established his clock and watch making business in Hong Kong in 1855. He was commissioned to design a ‘Typhoon barometer’ in 1871, which had some popularity in the region. As he failed to patent his design, copies were produced by rival makers, though the Falconer instruments being of higher quality and rarer, are now much sought-after.
