A superb, large George II Chinese Chippendale carved giltwood mirror, with carving of excellent quality and intricate detail throughout. The frame of pierced cartouche form, a central crest of finely carved scrolling, leaves in the form of a pagoda roof. The shoulders surmounted with Chinese fort towers in the style of the Great Wall of China, The whole frame with an intricately entwined, pierced, carved flower and leaf trellis work. The hips with again lattice work surmounted by further floral scrolls. The lower crest with a central carved giltwood and gesso image of stone cottage with emanating leaf scrolls bordered by scrolling leaf foliage and trelliswork. The frame surrounds a mercury silvered mirror plate.

A truly fantastic piece in excellent condition, it would form a magnificent centrepiece in an important room.
Excellent. Minor restorations, gilding largely original re-freshed in places. The plate apparently 18th century possibly re-silvered in the late 19th century.
