Of notable large scale, the rectangular seat on acanthus-carved cabriole legs. The design of the leg suggests an interesting transition in furniture design with the combination of a carved ‘hairy paw’ foot, which was fashionable in the 1740-50s, to the shaped cabriole leg illustrating the French influence of the 1760s. The crisp carving includes, unusually, an acanthus leaf positioned above the hairy paw foot.
Collection of Mrs. Leonard A. Cohn, acquired from “Mr. Farmer”.
Gift to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York in 1944.
Deaccessioned in 2015.
