Very fine George II circular sterling silver salver of substantial gauge. London 1730 by Robert Lucas. The salver stands on four imposing eight-lobed, cast, hoof feet. It has an applied, concave scalloped border and is engraved in the centre with a crest of a horse's hind leg, hoof upwards, rising out of a ducal coronet. The very finely engraved cartouche surrounding the crest incorporates a shell at the top and a putti mask at the base, which was very popular at that period, with a demi angel on either side trailing flowers, very much in the rococo style of the day. The full set of hallmarks is clearly stamped on the reverse of the salver but the maker's mark is rather rubbed as it was more lightly struck in the first place.
Very good condition and a very pleasing patina. The hallmarks stamped on the reverse are clear with the exception of the maker's markwhich is somewhat rubbed
