The linen press is veneered with panels of highly figured mahogany and East India satinwood, and has the original handles on the four drawers below which are raised on splayed bracket feet. The two cupboard doors with oval panels enclose a finely fitted interior with oak sliding trays.

The cabinet has three trade labels:
"MANT, Upholder & Cabinet-Maker, High Street, Winchester" (Printed by Darling & Robinson, Gt. Newport Street, London)
John Mant was included in the list of Freeman of the City 1791, and later Mayer for a number of terms. He was also an appraiser, auctioneer and possibly a retailer of London made furniture.

The cabinet corresponds with Thos. SHEARER's design of a "Wing Clothes Press" contained in the Cabinet-maker's London Book of Prices, 2nd Edition 1793, plate 3 (plate 67).

Illustrated in "Sheraton Furniture" by Ralph Fastnedge, fig. 85.
