This commode almost certainly made by a top London maker of the day. The crispness and incredible detail obtained by the carver, particularly to the upper gadrooned edge, is highly indicative of a highly skilled workshop.
Benjamin Edwards III was the fifth direct descendent to head the firm of A G Edwards & Co, an American financial services holding company, which was founded by his grandfather in 1887. Ben’s enthusiasm for Georgian furniture broadened into a fascination with English silver and brass. Ben Edwards, despite shrugging off pretensions to connoisseurship, was to become one of his era’s greatest collectors.
