The flaring body cast with a frieze of meandering hops and foliage on matted ground, bulbous gadrooned base on spreading foot, entwined vine handles, the foot engraved "RH to RC".
Paul Storr invented this complex "hops" decoration and used it on a number of mugs and cups, all of which were presumably intended for beer. A "hops" mug dated 1827 is in the Gans collection (see The Jerome and Rita Gans Collection of English Silver on Loan to The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts by J. Bliss) where it is conjectured that all were made after Storr left Rundell, Bridge & Rundell in 1819, but the present example, a very early example dated the year before he left, disproves that theory.
