A Fine George III Longcase Clock

Finely figured mahogany case standing on bracket feet with long trunk door and raised moulded panel to the plinth, reeded canted brass inlaid corners, arched hood with moulded cresting with side viewing apertures.


Spire and ball finials and ebony strung quarters below the round painted white dial. The dial with Roman numerals signed ‘James Bidlake, London’ with original finely cut blued steel hands.

The fine quality eight day five pillar movement is set between two heavy shouldered brass plates with anchor escapement and rack striking the hour on a large bell. Steel rod supporting the large brass pendulum bob. C.1785-90



‘Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World’ by Brian Loomes lists James Bidlake as working in Sun Street then later in Chiswell street between 1779 and 1825, he was apprenticed in 1772 and was the son of James Bidlake of Minories in London who worked as a clockmaker from 1762 to 1795.
